Yin yoga and connective tissue

Why holding a pose for five minutes feels so different from ordinary stretching.

Muscles like repetitive, warm movement. Connective tissue — fascia, ligaments, and joint capsules — responds to gentle load held over time.

Yin yoga works with that. Poses are done with relaxed muscles and held for three to five minutes. The goal is not to stretch as far as possible, but to apply soft, steady load.

Three principles of Yin: find a comfortable edge, become still, and stay long enough. If you feel sharp pain or tingling, come out of the pose.

Yin complements more active styles. Surfers, runners, and our Ashtanga students often come to Yin at Sunset to balance their practice.
